What is Retail Flow Intelligence

How footage from the cameras a store already has becomes flow indicators, and why that is more than a heatmap.

Every physical store has a flow. People come in, walk the aisles, stop at some departments, pass others by and leave through the checkouts. That movement is the raw material of decisions about layout, staffing, product exposure and opening hours. In most stores it is never measured: what exists is a manual count, a spreadsheet and the intuition of whoever runs the floor.

Retail Flow Intelligence is the practice of measuring that movement with what the store already has, its CCTV cameras, and turning it into aggregated, auditable, comparable data.

What goes in and what comes out

In goes recorded video, exported from the DVR or NVR. Out comes a set of indicators by time window and department:

  • entries and exits, by directional crossing of a virtual line;
  • customers per hour and peak hour;
  • dwell by zone, with mean, median and percentiles;
  • flow, density and speed in the store coordinate system;
  • frequent routes and transitions between departments.

Between input and output there is a fixed path: detection, per-camera tracking, calibration, projection onto the floor plan, zone assignment, event and aggregate. Every step leaves a record, and that is what makes the number auditable.

Why it is not just a heatmap

A heatmap shows where intensity was highest. It answers one question and hides several others: how long people stayed, where they came from, where they went next, whether the density peak coincided with queues at the checkouts. Flow intelligence treats the heatmap as one layer among many, over the same floor plan and the same clock.

What the number does not say

Flow and sales often move together, but correlation is not cause. An honest platform distinguishes what was measured, what the model inferred, what it predicts and what was simulated in a layout scenario. When data quality falls below the minimum, the indicator shows as partial, with the valid period. That discipline is what separates intelligence from decoration.

And privacy

Measuring movement does not require knowing who moves. With no facial recognition, ephemeral per-session identifiers and pseudonymised operational data, the operation's questions can be answered without turning customers into targets. Read more in Privacy by design.
